An EV charger is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor. You'll be faced with different plugs, cables, and standards. We know it can be confusing, but the first thing to always consider when looking to buy an electric car charging cable is the specifications and requirements for your electric vehicle. This guide will introduce you to different types of cables.

What is an EV charging cable?

EV charging cable is a fundamental part of charging your EV. They move the electric current from the charging point to your electric car or vehicle. EV charger cables are designed to safely deliver power from a power source to your electric car. Some charging stations have their own charging cables for you to use. But you have to use your own cable with others.

Types of cables

Mode 1 charging cables: This mode is represented by a basic cable for AC supply to the car. You can simply plug one end into the socket on your wall and the other end into your vehicle. It is restricted and prohibited in many parts of the world due to the safety problem.

Mode 2 charging cables: This type of cable usually comes with EVs. Compared to Mode 1, it has a connection to an ordinary domestic socket. The communication between the car and the charging port is set up via a box connected between the vehicle plug and connector plug (ICCB In-Cable Control Box). Some Mode 2 EV charging cables are even equipped with connectors for various CEE sockets. But Mode 2 cables are not meant for everyday use and should only be an option in situations when no charge point is available.

Mode 3 charging cables: This is the most common method to charge an EV. It is a connector cable between the EV charging station and the electric vehicle. It functions similarly to the Mode 2 charging, except that the wallbox is hardwired into the car parking/building's electrical supply. Therefore it's not portable. The cable can be attached to the charger or you need to use your own one.

Mode 4 charging cables: This mode of charging cables is only designed for fast charging. The cables must be permanently attached to the charging station and are frequently liquid-cooled to handle the heat because this method of charging transfers much more power directly to the battery.
